Showdown in Tuscany

This weekend Fiorentina and Milan go head to head for the last automatic spot in the Champions League. The Viola are already guaranteed a place in the qualifiers but a victory over the Rossoneri would see them leapfrog straight into the group stages.

Can it happen? Definitely yes. Should it happen? I think maybe so. At first I was inclined to say it might be better overall to have Milan in the main competition given their stature and pedigree. However, maybe it is time to let some new faces get in there. Unless the Milan giants spend a bit of money this summer they are only going to be another year older. The boys in purple, on the other hand, have a crop of younger players.

Of course, I'm hoping for a Fiorentina win anyway but it should be a pretty good game. Nice end to the season while Torino and Bologna fight it out to avoid the drop at the other end of the table.

Well gila was reliably useless in a tough game as usual.

Making CL could give milan a better chance of making changes.

I think now that Leo is in charge there will be a very different character to the squad, even tho Leo's a product of the system

Pat, you are lucky you can discard a 20-goal a season "reliably useless" striker. We'll have one of those any time.

Certainly getting into the group stages was a boost to Milan. Leonardo is an very non-Italian style appointment but I suppose it is a bit like when Capello came to power. If he does half as well as Fabio that would be pretty impressive...

was never a 20-goal a season guy for us.

agree with your blog on football italia. Theres no point in following the Chelski/Madrid/City model for success, it hasnt brought them much anyway, italian clubs just need to be better at what they do, scouting, youth development, ect.

Pat, I hope teams see the point and start looking at other routes to victory. But I am not sure if they ever will.
